Favorite Foods for Gifts

Some of my favorite gifts to give in December are specialty foods and here are three companies that produce yummy holiday treats. For peppermint and wintergreen candy canes that melt in your mouth order from Altamarie's candies in Kingston, New York. This candy-making store has been in business for 94 years and their super fresh hand-made candy canes have been a staple in our home for twenty years. You can phone them at 800 721 7744 or go to www.candycornerusa.com.

In Athens, Georgia there's a gourmet pickle company two years in business called Phickles Pickles. My daughter found it online last December when her father asked for pickled okra for Christmas. Crunchy, hot and sour, this is definitely the best pickled okra we've ever tasted. Phickles Pickles doesn't take credit cards, you email them your order, and they send an invoice with your shipment. Here's the link: http://www.phickles.com/

Hot pepper jelly is one of my favorite condiments and my friend Lee Leach told me about this Los Angeles based company called Jenkins Jellies that makes Hellfire Pepper Jelly. At first it's sweet, and then a hot kick follows, making it great with meats and poultry. Plus this company understands the importance of packaging, which is fantastic, and they include a little spoon to stir the jelly and a personal note from the owner, Hillary Danner. Here's the link: www.jenkinsjellies.com Danner's cousin wrote about this yummy product in her blog GOOP.

Harbour Island
It's not easy to get to the Bahamian island called Harbour Island, but worth the trip, if you're in need of a few days of R & R. This glorious, low-key island is psychologically as far away from city life as you can get--and so, we traveled there for a July 4th weekend getaway. All you need is a bathing suit, suntan lotion and dark glasses. It's a casual as can be. If you go, get ready to feast your eyes on gorgeous sea and sky, at least six shades of blue. Did I forget to mention the sand? It's pale pink and soft and hot in July, but isn't that what we got to the beach for? The unending sea and sky in all directions, the surf and soft winds, and warmth that relaxes us to the bone...with nothing to do but eat and nap? We dream of it in the biting winds of February when we brave the bitter cold going to work each day. For more information, check out this link: http://www.harbourislandguide.com/about.htm .

Three Dogs Barking
I wanted to call the company Three Dogs Barking because the business started in my home and my dogs were always underfoot. As our staff grew, we worked in the kitchen, bedrooms, den and living room. We filled closets with shopping bags, stuffed tissue paper under sofas, stored display items under beds, and jewelry covered the kitchen counters where I worked on it day and night. The apartment became a showroom, a warehouse, an office. The dogs loved the coming and going of employees and customers and they loudly greeted everyone. We had three dogs barking then, now we have four. Meet them: Fiona, Pinkderton, Mini and Lola.
